Pacific Upgrades Spanos Center with New Visual Experience

STOCKTON, Calif. – The Pacific Athletics Department is proud to announce the completion of multiple renovations within the Alex G. Spanos Center. These projects were possible with a generous donation from the Spanos family.

The 6,150-seat arena was revamped from floor to ceiling, with the refurbishment and redesign of the basketball and volleyball courts, upgraded West Coast Conference logo and opponent signage, installation of LED lighting, and various other additions.

“These upgrades to the Alex G. Spanos Center demonstrate the commitment that Pacific Athletics and the Spanos family have to our men’s and women’s basketball teams and volleyball program, expressed Director of Athletics Janet Lucas. “The investment in these upgrades is a next step in enhancing the facility for our student-athletes and fans. With each step forward, we support our continued growth and success, while providing our supporters an even more enjoyable game day experience.”

It has been nearly a decade since the arena has experienced significant changes to its playing surface. The basketball and volleyball courts both received their final touches this past week along with the addition of the Penney and Associates logo, which represents the extension of their partnership with Pacific inside the Alex G. Spanos Center.

Furthermore, an addition of bold graphics alongside the logo includes Tigers stripes within the basketball keys, the “Tigers” logo in the end zones and the “Pacific” logo alongside the “Powercat” logo at center court. The court is also now branded with the new West Coast Conference logo, which was unveiled at last season’s WCC Basketball Championships in Las Vegas.

The improved lighting, which was contracted through Collins Electrical, is not only an upgrade for the fan experience, but also assists in reducing our carbon footprint and increases foot candles for national and regional broadcasts.

“The entire Collins Electrical Team is proud to have had the opportunity to do a design-build project with the University of the Pacific team to install the new GigaTera LED high bay lighting inside of the Alex G. Spanos Center, said Chris Zaro, Collins Electrical Company, Inc. Special Projects Manager. “These new lights will enhance the fan experience and truly showcase the beautiful facility that the Tigers call home. We are excited to hear the positive feedback from fans when they first step foot into the Spanos Center.”

Overall, the upgrades of the renovation project in the Spanos Center began almost 18 months ago. To begin, Pacific Athletics partnered with Ad Art to install identical video boards on the northeast and southeast corners of the facility, while also adding ribbon boards on the north and south ends of the playing surface in 2018.

“Ad Art was pleased to work with the University of Pacific and their Athletics Department in renovating their scoreboards, scoring systems and production department in Spanos Center, said Jeff Bottarini, Vice President for StadiaVision Electronics Corporate. “We replaced the existing out dated boards with new state of the art, 6mm pixel, full color, video capable LED screens. We also added two 6mm ribbon boards, running the width of the arena, behind each basket. We worked closely with Michael January, Digital Media Manager, in replacing everything from shot clocks to updating the production room. Together, we gave the venue an entirely new look.”

In 2017-18, floor-to-ceiling banners celebrating student-athletes and the university’s historic athletic accomplishments were installed, as well as hand rails in the chair-back seating area of the facility.
